Family Minister - Oceanside Sanctuary (Oceanside, CA)
Job Description:
Do you have a passion for ministry to children, youth, and families? Are you committed to a Christianity of inclusion and social justice? Under the direction and supervision of the Co-Lead Ministers, the Family Minister will develop and implement a comprehensive and engaging program for children and youth in and around The Oceanside Sanctuary community that is aligned with our values, vision, mission, and priorities.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Grow in your faith, knowledge of Christ, and knowledge of the Christian tradition.
• As a member of the congregation, grow in your relationships with church members and in your alignment with our mission.
• As a minister of the gospel, grow in your own calling and in your knowledge of the community and context in which we minister.
• Plan, organize, and lead children and youth into relationships and activities that nurture their understanding of a just and generous Christian spirituality.
• Provide safe, nurturing, and growing youth and children’s ministry spaces and events.
• Foster an environment of creativity and respect for all children, volunteers and families.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
• Attend weekly staff meetings in-person.
• Be present at Sunday Gatherings for setup, worship, Sunday School, fellowship, and breakdown (approximately 8 AM - 1 PM).
• Provide pastoral care and emotional support to church and greater community youth as well as their parents, when appropriate.
• Recruit, train, and support adult volunteers and coordinate their involvement in youth and children’s ministries.
• Plan and facilitate approximately 1-2 youth gatherings or activities per month outside the Sunday morning worship gathering.
• Have regular one-to-one meetings with church members and new youth.
• Plan and facilitate special summer activities for children and youth (such as retreats, camps, outreach trips, etc.).
• Facilitate opportunities for the youth to engage in community outreach.
• Work with support staff to ensure accurate, timely, and consistent communication of all youth and children programs through media channels.
• Maintain an accurate administrative database, records, and files for your ministry.
• Submit an annual budget request and ministry goals and objectives as directed.
• Attend all church events as directed by the Co-Lead Ministers; attend occasional Regional events as directed by the Co-Lead Ministers.
• Other duties as assigned by the Co-Lead Ministers.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
• Demonstrates an evolving personal faith that embraces intellectual curiosity, active spirituality, and a commitment to community impact.
• A proven track record working with families, children, and/or youth in a church or nonprofit setting.
• Demonstrated ability to create safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQIA+, neurodiverse, racially diverse, and economically diverse young people.
• Graduate degree or certificate in theological studies, pastoral leadership, or spiritual direction or equivalent.
• Must possess a nuanced understanding of biblical texts through a critical interpretive lens. Able to explore diverse theological perspectives with young people.
• A genuine passion for nurturing the spiritual, emotional, social, and intellectual development of young people, coupled with a deep commitment to social justice, inclusivity, and compassion in action.
• Exceptional ability to build authentic, trusting relationships with children, youth, parents, volunteers, and church staff, recognizing and affirming their unique identities and experiences.
• Humble and eager to learn from diverse perspectives, committed to shared leadership, and able to work collaboratively.
• Clear criminal background check.
TYPICAL SCHEDULE
The Youth and Children’s Minister should have a flexible schedule that allows them to work some Saturdays and evenings. Sunday work and office hours are required and will be determined with a supervisor based on a mutually beneficial schedule.
